What are sealants you may ask? Sealants are a plastic material that is applied to the chewing surfaces of the molars and premolars. They are commonly done on children and adolescents but may also be applied on adults. This plastic material bonds deep into the grooves (pits and fissures) of the chewing surfaces to act as a barrier from bacteria, plaque, acids, and food. Thorough brushing and flossing helps remove food particles from the smooth surfaces of teeth but the pits and fissures are where the bristles cannot reach. Not being able to properly clean those grooves causes tooth decay from the sticky film of bacteria called plaque sitting there over time.
Sealants are very easy to apply. It takes only a few minutes and may prevent cavities for many years to come. First the pits and fissures are cleaned and then conditioned so that the tooth may properly accept the sealant and bond to the tooth. The sealant is applied in liquid form and then hardened with a special curing light.
Prevention from cavities by applying sealants is much better than having treatment for a cavity. It is also much less expensive. When properly applied and maintained (good oral hygiene), sealants are extremely effective in preventing pit and fissure decay. Savings in both dollars and discomfort is a big advantage. For over 20 years, the American Dental Association has evaluated the different types of sealants and their effectiveness. The ADA seal of acceptance proves the products safety and efficacy.
Main ingredients in preventing tooth decay are not only applying sealants, but also good oral hygiene. Please talk to your doctor today to find out if you or your child is a candidate for sealants!
