Periodontal Therapy: What it Is, And What You Should Do

It seems like a complex and expensive phrase, "Periodontal Therapy." Perhaps it's a special procedure for the wealthy, or something celebrities utilize to get their perfect smiles? Well, periodontal therapy is neither complex nor expensive and the good news is you can, and should, have this treatment performed. In this blog we will examine what periodontal therapy is and how it can greatly benefit your dental health.

Periodontal therapy is a fancy word for plaque removal. Plaque is a byproduct and combination of food and bacteria. It starts out soft and sticky, but eventually will harden into tartar. Over time, plaque and tartar can cause one of the more common issues patients hear about, gingivitis. This is where the gums around your teeth become inflamed because of infection.

If left unchecked, the plaque and tartar can and will continue to build up, creating more inflammation, and more problems. It is definitely a dental problem that should be solved as soon as possible before it becomes worse and the solutions become more difficult and more expensive.

Periodontal therapy is not only effective in helping you to prevent these issues; it's also very standard in the cleaning process. This is one of the reasons having regular check-ups with your dentist is essential to the well-being and health of your mouth.

Essentially, your dentist utilizes a variety to tools when they remove plaque and tartar, ranging from the normal hand instruments, or the ultrasonic, which vibrates at a high frequency to break down the plaque and tartar. Using these tools along with their knowledge and skill can effectively clean the entire mouth and solve any possible plaque issues.

In addition to your regular dental checkups, proper daily cleaning such as brushing three times a day, flossing and using a mouth rinse is one of the best ways to help prevent any possible plaque issues. These simple tried and true methods of dental care are great ways to help reduce your risk of gingivitis, or periodontal disease.

To learn more about periodontal disease and therapy, ask your dentist during your next visit. They'll be more than happy to explain the risks, and preventative measures, so you can avoid costly surgeries or procedures.
